Michael Cohen, Trump’s Former Lawyer, Agrees to Testify to Congress

“I wish to make transparent that we have no seductiveness in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing rapist investigations,” Mr. Cummings said.

Lawmakers of both parties have sought to strengthen Mr. Mueller given he was appointed. That is expected to be a pivotal thesis of a Senate acknowledgment conference subsequent week for Mr. Trump’s hopeful for profession general, William P. Barr, who could shortly manage a Mueller investigation. Democratic lawmakers on a Judiciary Committee sought assurances from Mr. Barr on Thursday that he would not meddle with a review as it wraps up. But they left private meetings with him observant that they would need a open oath during his hearing.

Mr. Cummings pronounced in a brief talk on Thursday that he had famous Mr. Cohen would attest for some time and had oral with him when arranging a hearing.

“He’ll have a possibility to tell his side of a story, and we’ll have a possibility to doubt him,” he said. “The American people merit that.”

In a CNN interview in December, Mr. Cummings compared Mr. Cohen’s coming to that of John Dean, President Richard M. Nixon’s White House counsel, in 1973 before a special Senate cabinet questioning a Watergate scandal. Mr. Dean concerned himself, tip administration officials and a boss himself in a cover of a 1972 break-in during a Democratic National Committee headquarters.

“This is a watershed moment,” Mr. Cummings said, invoking Mr. Dean, who he pronounced “changed a march of America” with his testimony.

It was misleading either Mr. Cohen’s agreement to attest before a Oversight Committee would obviate appearances, in open or private, before other House panels.
