Was that supposed to be Kate Upton on Vogue‘s buzzed-about April cover?

The magazine made a major splash today when it revealed its new cover featuring Kim Kardashian and Kanye West—but E! News has exclusively learned that Vogue initially had another plan in the works.

A source tells us that Upton was originally slated to be on the April cover before the decision was made to use Kim and Kanye instead.

However, when asked about the alleged cover switcheroo, Hildy Kuryk, Communications Director at Vogue, said, “We are all huge supporters of Kate here at Vogue and have been thrilled to feature her numerous times in the past year, both on the cover and inside the magazine. There was never a cover commitment made to Kate, and we look forward to working with her in the future.”

Naturally, Kim tweeted about the truly OMG-worthy news, writing, “This is such a dream come true!!! Thank you @VogueMagazine for this cover! O M GGGGGG!!! I can’t even…”

Even Annie Leibovitz, the photographer who captured the gorgeous images for the mag, decided to get in on the social media hype by joining Twitter. And guess who was one of the first people to give her a shout-out? “Please welcome @ to twitter! She is the legendary photographer who shot our @ cover! Love u Annie! ,” Kim wrote.

While Upton did not flaunt her famous curves on the cover, the blond bombshell was still featured inside the issue in a number of gorgeous gowns alongside a candid interview where she shuts down a suggested comparison between herself and Marilyn Monroe.

“Maybe it was drugs and alcohol that destroyed her. Maybe having no family support destroyed her,” Kate says. “What I try to do—and it took me a little while to learn—is to only do things I really believe in so that it’s more of a collaboration,” she continues. “That way, I’m not pretending to be someone I’m not. I’m not putting out this, Look at me! I’m sexy! and then feeling like a fake, which would lead to feeling depressed and empty inside.”

Plus, it’s not like the 21-year-old model never got her Vogue moment. Upton covered the June 2013 issue of the fashion bible, looking glamorous as always.
