Re “Football Destroyed My Husband’s Mind” (Sunday Review, Feb. 4):

I review Emily Kelly’s touching letter as someone who was inept 30 years ago while creation a tackle in a college football game, and as a son of a Hall of Fame linebacker pang from neurological illness caused by a thousands of hits he endured personification in college and professionally.

So while we have always desired football, we know a dangers.

There are stairs to lessen a risks, generally among youths. Now that there is substantial justification of a attribute between head mishap in children and destiny neurological problems, contact football should be criminialized for those underneath 14.

Until such a ban, we need to order inhabitant concussion comment and involvement protocols; need relatives or guardians to pointer an authorisation surveying a risks and intensity consequences of personification tackle football; safeguard that schools and leagues have guilt word to cover a costs of inauspicious injuries; and charge reserve preparation and training for all concerned in girl sports.

We can never retreat a harmful medical conditions that Rob Kelly and thousands of others are now confronting. But we can offer a improved augury for a sons and daughters who play football and other sports.
