Deputy punches by iced-over pool to rescue drowning child on Christmas Day

ST. GEORGE, Utah — A Washington County Sheriff’s emissary punched by a ice and pacifist into a solidified pond to rescue a drowning 8-year-old boy on Christmas Day.

A day later, observant his thoughts were still with a hospitalized child and his family, Sgt. Aaron Thompson played down any intrepidity on his part, saying he had dived into a icy H2O meaningful there was no other approach a child competence survive.

“I knew what we was removing into,” a maestro emissary and former hunt and rescue dive group member said. “I knew how cold that H2O was going to be.”

The child was chasing his dog Monday dusk in a tiny village of New Harmony, about 30 miles north of St. George, when another child saw him tumble by a ice. Unable to help, a other child ran inside to tell family members, who afterwards reported a occurrence shortly after 5 p.m. internal time.

Thompson arrived on stage and listened from another chairman on stage that she had seen a boy’s palm only mins earlier, he said. So he nude off his military rigging and used his hands and forearms to beat his way into a ice, eventually wading in adult to his neck about 25 feet from a shoreline before locating a child and lifting him out of a water.

“Once we saw his face we only pulled his conduct adult above a water,” Thompson said.

The child had been in a H2O for about 30 minutes, though a wintry temperatures — a H2O was 37 degrees — actually meant that there was a possibility he could still survive, Thompson said.

As of late Tuesday, a boy’s condition had not been released.

Thompson was also hospitalized and treated for symptoms of hypothermia, as good as cuts and abrasions postulated while violation by a ice.

Sheriff Cory Pulsipher called Thompson a hero.

“A lot of people would substantially like to consider they would have dived in too, though how many indeed would have?” he said. “He hates carrying a spotlight on him, though he’s a hero.”

Thompson pronounced his dive group knowledge valid invaluable, crediting a sheriff’s bureau for progressing a enlightenment where many deputies sight in their personal time to supply themselves with skills that can be used on a job.
